5E lesson flow
01
Engage
6 min
Teacher Does
Show two paper spinners and ask what could be tested.
Students Do
Turn observations into testable questions.
Ask
- Which question could we answer with measurements?
Look For
A question connecting one change to a measurable result.
02
Explore
13 min
Teacher Does
Model a two-condition spinner investigation.
Students Do
Identify the tested variable, controls, and fall-time measurement, then collect repeated trials.
Ask
- What changes?
- What stays the same?
- What do we measure?
Look For
One tested variable and consistent controls.
03
Explain
9 min
Teacher Does
Introduce variable, control, trial, data, and evidence.
Students Do
Label parts of the class investigation.
Ask
- Which numbers are data?
- Which conditions are controls?
Look For
Correct connection between plan and evidence.
04
Elaborate
10 min
Teacher Does
Show a data set with one unusual result.
Students Do
Decide what should be checked or repeated and explain why.
Ask
- Does one unusual value erase the other trials?
Look For
Repeat or inspect the setup before making a conclusion.
05
Evaluate
7 min
Teacher Does
Give a new investigation scenario.
Students Do
Name a testable question, one variable, one control, and one evidence statement.
Ask
- What can the data support?
Look For
A bounded conclusion tied to evidence.
Student goal
I can plan a fair investigation, collect repeated data, and use evidence to explain what the results support.
Learning objectives
- Recognize a testable science question and identify the variable being changed.
- Plan a fair investigation by keeping important conditions the same and repeating trials.
- Use measured data as evidence for a careful conclusion.
Materials
- Teacher-prepared paper spinners
- Paper clips
- Meter stick
- Stopwatch or timer
- Recording sheet
Before class
- Prepare two spinner designs that differ in one feature such as wing length.
- Use the same paper and body size for both designs.
- Choose a safe indoor drop height.
- Prepare a simple repeated-trial table.
- Open Teach Mode.
Prior knowledge
- Students can make simple measurements with rulers and timers.
- Students can compare two groups or conditions.
Vocabulary
- testable question
- A question that can be investigated using observations or measurements.
- variable
- A condition that can change in an investigation.
- control
- A condition kept the same so a comparison is fair.
- trial
- One complete run of an investigation.
- data
- Recorded observations or measurements.
- evidence
- Data or observations used to support an explanation.
Differentiation
- Use a four-box organizer: Question · Change · Keep Same · Measure.
- Assign roles such as releaser, timer, and recorder.
- Provide sentence frames for claims.
- Allow calculator use only if needed for later numeric summaries.
- For extension, ask students how they would improve an investigation after an unusual result.
Assessment
- Check testable questions.
- Check identification of variable and controls.
- Check repeated-trial recording.
- Check whether conclusions cite evidence and avoid words such as always unless justified.
Exit ticket
Write one testable question and name one thing you would keep the same.
Extension
Revise the spinner investigation to test a new variable while keeping the comparison fair.
