Teacher Does
Show an unlabeled microscope image of living tissue beside a colorful textbook-style cell model. Ask: Which one is an observation? Which one is a model? Do not identify organelles yet.
Students Do
Write two things they can actually see and one thing the model might help explain.
Ask
- What can you point to in the image?
- What does the diagram add that the image does not show clearly?
Look For
Students distinguish visible evidence from explanatory model features.

Explore

Teacher Does
Run microscope/image stations with a plant sample and an animal tissue sample. Require students to record only visible features first. Offer teacher-provided images as an equivalent fallback.
Students Do
Observe, sketch, record cell arrangement and visible boundaries, note whether a nucleus is visible/unclear, then compare the two samples.
Ask
- What structures can you actually see?
- What evidence suggests these samples are different kinds of cells?
- Which claims would go beyond this image?
Look For
Evidence-based descriptions; no invented mitochondria or chloroplast labels in images where they are not resolved.

Explain

Teacher Does
Introduce cell as a system and use a simplified plant/animal model to connect membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria, cell wall, and chloroplast to functions. Keep observation versus model explicit.
Students Do
Annotate three structure → function → cell-help chains and mark which structures are shared or plant-model additions.
Ask
- What does this structure help the cell do?
- How does that job help the whole cell?
- Is this structure visible in today's microscope image or known from the model/other evidence?
Look For
Accurate functions without brain/powerhouse analogies or biochemical detail.

Elaborate

Give groups a flawed cell model plus a new leaf-cell scenario. Ask them to diagnose misleading features, then choose structures that fit the new cell needs.
Students Do
Correct the model using evidence, compare plant and animal models, and justify two structure/function choices for the new scenario.
Ask
- What is scientifically wrong or misleading?
- Which evidence supports your correction?
- Which structure would help with this new job, and why?
Look For
Transfer reasoning, not memorized lists; students note that models simplify and cells vary.

Give a short independent exit task with one microscope observation and one structure/function prompt.
Students Do
State one observation-based claim, then complete one structure → function → whole-cell explanation.

- What evidence in the image supports your idea?
- How does the structure's function matter to the cell?

Evidence separated from inference plus a scientifically accurate structure/function chain.

Materials
- Prepared plant-cell slide or high-quality microscope image (onion epidermis works well)
- Prepared animal epithelial tissue slide or high-quality teacher-provided microscope image
- Optional prepared Elodea leaf slide or image to show chloroplasts in some plant cells
- Classroom light microscopes if available
- Plant and animal cell model cards labeled MODEL — NOT TO SCALE
- Student investigation sheet
- Pencils or colored pencils
Before class
- If using microscopes, focus and test prepared slides before class; provide the same images on screen as a no-microscope fallback.
- Use commercial prepared slides or teacher-provided images. Do not make cheek swabs the default activity.
- Choose microscope examples that make boundaries, arrangement, and any visible nuclei clear without pretending every organelle can be seen.
- Keep the observation image and the explanatory cell model separate. Label models as simplified and not to scale.
- If using onion bulb epidermis, plan to address why chloroplasts may not be visible even though the tissue is plant tissue.
Prior knowledge
- Living things need materials and energy and respond to their environment.
- A scientific model represents important parts or relationships but does not show every detail.
- Students have used observations as evidence in earlier science lessons.
Vocabulary
- cell
- The smallest unit that can carry out the basic functions of life.
- cell membrane
- A thin boundary around a cell that helps control what moves into and out of the cell.
- cytoplasm
- The material inside the cell membrane where many cell structures are found and many cell processes occur.
- nucleus
- A structure in many cells that contains genetic information and helps direct many cell activities.
- mitochondria
- Cell structures where reactions help release usable energy from food molecules for cell activities.
- cell wall
- A supporting layer outside the cell membrane in plant cells and some other organisms.
- chloroplast
- A structure in plant cells that contain it where light energy is captured for photosynthesis.
Differentiation
- Provide a two-column organizer: WHAT I CAN SEE / WHAT THE MODEL HELPS EXPLAIN.
- Use the frame: “The ___ helps the cell ___ because its function is ___.”
- Allow students to point to a visual and explain orally before writing.
- Pre-highlight the membrane and cell wall separately for students who confuse the two boundaries.
- For extension, compare onion epidermis with a leaf image and ask why chloroplast visibility differs between plant tissues.
Assessment
- Listen for students separating observation from inference during microscope/image work.
- Check that membrane and cell wall are treated as different structures.
- Check mitochondria language for energy release/transfer from food molecules rather than energy creation.
- Check plant/animal comparisons for evidence and model limits rather than absolute 'all cells' claims.
- Use the exit ticket to verify structure → function → whole-cell reasoning.
Exit ticket
From a new cell image, write one observation you can support directly. Then choose one modeled cell structure and explain: structure → function → how it helps the whole cell.
Extension
Compare two specialized cell images and infer how visible shape or structure might support different jobs, while stating what the image cannot prove by itself.
