- Long rope or spring
- Tape marker
- Wave diagram cards

Before class
- Mark one fixed section of the rope with tape so students can track material motion.
- Prepare pairs of wave diagrams that isolate amplitude or wavelength changes.
- Keep comparisons qualitative; no formulas or quantitative wave calculations.
Prior knowledge
- Students know vibrations can make sound.
- Students can identify repeating patterns and compare distances qualitatively.
Vocabulary
- wave
- A repeating disturbance that can transfer energy from one place to another.
- amplitude
- The height of a wave from its middle position to a crest or trough in a model.
- wavelength
- The distance between matching points on repeating waves, such as crest to crest.
- crest
- A high point in a transverse wave model.
- trough
- A low point in a transverse wave model.
- vibration
- A repeated back-and-forth motion that can produce sound.
Differentiation
- Provide pre-drawn middle lines and labeled crests.
- Let students trace crest-to-crest spacing with a finger before writing wavelength.
- Use sentence frames for model evidence.
- For extension, have students design two waves with one property held constant while the other changes.
