Before class

  • State that the model sequence is undisturbed before using lower-is-older.
  • Place plant fossils in the lower layer and marine shells in the higher layer.
  • Keep the middle layer neutral.
  • Do not provide exact numerical ages or require detailed formation mechanisms.

Prior knowledge

  • Students know fossils preserve evidence of past life.
  • Students can describe lower, middle, and higher positions.

Vocabulary

rock layer
A band of rock in a sequence that can preserve evidence from part of Earth's history.
fossil
Preserved remains, impressions, or traces of an organism from long ago.
pattern
A repeated or ordered relationship that can be used as evidence.
relative time
The order of events as earlier or later without giving exact ages in years.
landscape
The visible features and shape of an area of land.
evidence
Observations or information used to support an explanation.

Differentiation

  • Use position arrows and fossil icons on cards.
  • Provide the frame: The lower layer shows __, while the higher layer shows __, so __.
  • Let students rehearse their explanation orally.
  • For extension, ask what new evidence could strengthen the model.

Assessment

  • Check use of the undisturbed assumption.
  • Check relative-time language.
  • Require both fossil observations in the landscape explanation.
  • Reject unsupported exact ages or mechanisms.
