Teacher Does
Show a paper sign and two different cover samples. Ask which cover might help keep the sign dry, but do not confirm an answer yet.
Students Do
Point to a prediction and suggest how the class could find out instead of guessing.
Ask
- What is the object we want to protect?
- What material could we test?
- How could a test help us choose?
Look For
Students begin separating the paper sign (object) from the material sample and suggest using evidence from a test.

Explore

Teacher Does
Model the fair water-cover test: same-size cover, same-size paper underneath, five drops, and the same wait time. Pairs test paper towel, cotton fabric, and thin plastic sheet.
Students Do
Add five drops to each cover, wait about ten seconds, lift the cover, and circle DRY or WET for the paper underneath.
Ask
- What stayed the same in every test?
- What did we change?
- What happened to the paper underneath?
Look For
Students record the actual result for each sample rather than predicting from the material name.

Explain

Build a four-part chart with one concrete example: OBJECT → MATERIAL → PROPERTY → PURPOSE. Name absorbent and water-resistant from the class water results.
Students Do
Point to the object, material, property, and purpose; use the tested samples while saying the new words.
Ask
- What is the material?
- What property did our test show?
- What purpose could that property help with?
Look For
Students do not use object and material as the same word and connect a property to observed behavior.

Teacher Does
Introduce a second simple test. Gently bend a rubber strip, the thin plastic sheet, and a wood craft stick. Then offer new jobs that need water resistance, easy bending, or absorbency.
Students Do
Observe or gently test bending, sort the tested samples by what they did, and choose a sample for each new job.
Ask
- Could one sample have more than one useful property?
- Which result matters for this job?
- Would every piece of plastic or fabric behave exactly the same?
Look For
Students use sample-specific evidence and understand that one material can have more than one property.

Evaluate

Show a new design problem: a paper label must wrap around a bottle and stay protected from a few drops. Ask students to choose from tested samples.
Students Do
Choose by pointing, circling, or speaking and name the two test results that support the choice.
Ask
- Which sample fits both needs?
- What did the bend test show?
- What did the water test show?
Look For
Students choose from evidence rather than color, preference, or a memorized material rule.

Materials
- Same-size paper towel samples
- Same-size cotton fabric samples
- Same-size thin plastic sheet samples
- Paper squares to place under each cover
- Trays
- Droppers
- Small cups with a little water
- Rubber strips
- Wood craft sticks
- Pencils or crayons
Before class
- Cut the three water-test cover samples to about the same size.
- Prepare one dry paper square under each cover sample for every pair or demonstration set.
- Limit water to a few drops per trial and place each set on a tray.
- Place a rubber strip and wood craft stick where students can see or gently test bending.
- Open Teach This Lesson before class.
Prior knowledge
- Students know that familiar objects can be made from different materials.
- Students can compare what happens in a simple test by looking closely.

Differentiation
- Read every task aloud and keep the real material samples visible while students answer.
- Let students record by circling DRY/WET and respond by pointing or speaking instead of writing sentences.
- Preteach the four essential words with picture cards: material, property, absorbent, water-resistant.
- For students needing more support, compare only two water-test samples first, then add the third.
- For extra challenge, ask students to name two properties one tested sample showed and explain which purpose each could help.
Assessment
- Listen for a clear distinction between object, material, property, and purpose.
- Check whether investigation records match what actually happened to each paper square.
- Check whether students connect absorbent or water-resistant to the observed water behavior.
- During transfer, look for a material choice supported by both relevant test results when the purpose has two needs.
Exit ticket
Show a new material sample and one job. Students point, say, or draw the test they would use before choosing it.
Extension
Give pairs a new safe classroom material sample. Ask them to choose one simple property to test, record what happened, and name a purpose the result could help with.
