Soil Properties: Which Material Holds Water Best? — 5E Lesson Plan
Earth Science · 45 minutes
Grade 2
5E lesson flow
01
Engage
6 min
Teacher Does
Show three dry samples and ask students to observe particle size and texture.
Students Do
Describe visible and tactile differences without predicting drainage yet.
Ask
- Which sample looks coarse? Which looks fine?
Look For
Observable descriptions.
02
Explore
15 min
Teacher Does
Guide equal-water drainage tests.
Students Do
Pour equal water, wait the same time, and measure collected water.
Ask
- What stayed the same?
- What did we measure?
Look For
Consistent test conditions and units.
03
Explain
8 min
Teacher Does
Connect collected-water amount with water remaining in each sample.
Students Do
Use data to rank samples for drainage in this test.
Ask
- If less drained, where is more of the water?
Look For
More remained in the sample at measurement time.
04
Elaborate
10 min
Teacher Does
Present anonymous data from new samples.
Students Do
Interpret the new pattern and discuss why real soils can differ.
Ask
- Would every natural soil act exactly like our prepared sample?
Look For
Recognition that real soils are mixtures.
05
Evaluate
6 min
Teacher Does
Collect the mystery-soil worksheet.
Students Do
Use new numbers to support a claim.
Ask
- Which measurement is your evidence?
Look For
Numerical evidence tied to the claim.
Student goal
I can compare earth materials by observing them and measuring how much water drains through.
Learning objectives
- I can describe visible differences among prepared soil materials.
- I can run an equal-water comparison and measure the water that drains through.
- I can use the result to explain which sample held more water in this test.
Materials
- Prepared sand-rich, silt-rich, and clay-rich samples
- Three matching funnels or cups with drainage holes
- Coffee filters
- Graduated cups
- Water
- Trays
- Spoons
Before class
- Use equal dry sample amounts.
- Pretest the setup so water drains safely within class time.
- Use the same filter type and container for all samples.
- Place trays under every setup.
Prior knowledge
- Earth materials can look and feel different.
- Measurements can be evidence.
Vocabulary
- soil
- A mixture of weathered rock pieces, organic matter, air, and water found at Earth's surface.
- sand
- An earth material with relatively large, gritty particles.
- silt
- A fine earth material with particles smaller than sand and larger than clay.
- clay
- A very fine earth material whose tiny particles can pack closely together.
- drain
- To let water move through and out of a material.
Differentiation
- Use clear measuring cups with large marks.
- Provide a data table with sample icons.
- Offer the frame: Sample __ held more water because only __ mL drained.
- For extension, compare how packing the same material changes drainage while keeping other variables controlled.
Assessment
- Check sample observations.
- Check measurement accuracy.
- Check fair-test controls.
- Check that claims are tied to collected-water data.
Exit ticket
Two equal samples each receive 80 mL. X drains 60 mL and Y drains 25 mL. Which held more water during the test, and what is your evidence?
Extension
Test how loose versus gently packed samples of the SAME material affect drainage.
