Pluck a stretched rubber band once. Ask students to watch and listen before giving the movement a science name.

Watch, listen, and describe what they notice by pointing, acting, or speaking.

Look For
Students notice back-and-forth movement and connect the movement with the sound.

Teacher Does
Guide pairs through a simple moving-versus-still rubber-band comparison. Keep the same band and box for both observations.
Students Do
Observe the band before touching it, pluck gently, watch and listen, then compare after the band stops.

- What stayed the same?
- What changed?
- When did you hear sound?
Look For
Students use the same object to compare vibrating and still conditions.

Explain

Teacher Does
Name the observed movement as vibration. Introduce sound source and evidence using the students' own observations.
Students Do
Act out a vibration and complete the oral frame: “I know it vibrated because I observed ___.”

- What does vibration mean?
- What was the sound source?
- What evidence did we collect?
Look For
Students use back-and-forth movement as evidence, not color, size, or shape.

Show the membrane test. Place tiny paper pieces on tightly stretched plastic wrap. Play a nearby speaker at a comfortable volume, then turn it off.
Students Do
Compare the membrane and paper pieces with the speaker playing and off.
Ask
- What moved even though we did not touch it?
- What changed when the speaker was turned off?
Look For
Students observe that sound can make nearby material vibrate.

Use one new picture from Practice or the worksheet. Ask students to identify vibration and give one observation as evidence.
Students Do
Point, speak, or draw one piece of evidence.
Ask
- Which material is vibrating?
- How do you know?

A correct identification plus a relevant observation such as back-and-forth movement.

Materials
- Small boxes or sturdy cups
- Large classroom rubber bands
- Hand drum or sturdy container with a flexible surface
- Bowl or container
- Plastic wrap
- A few tiny paper pieces
- Small speaker
- Worksheet or recording sheet
- Crayons
Before class
- Stretch one large rubber band safely around each box or cup.
- Stretch plastic wrap tightly over a bowl and place a few tiny paper pieces on top.
- Test the speaker close to the membrane at a comfortable classroom volume so movement is visible without using loud sound.
- Keep rubber bands away from faces and do not overstretch them.
- Open Teach This Lesson and Practice before class.

- Students know that ears help us hear sounds.

- Let students place two picture cards under MOVING and STILL before using the word vibration.
- For extension, ask students to find another safe sound source and predict which part of it vibrates.
Assessment
- Listen for students describing back-and-forth movement.
- Check whether students connect the moving rubber band or drumhead with sound.
- Check whether students identify the moving membrane or paper pieces as evidence that sound can make matter vibrate.
- Use the exit response to distinguish evidence from unrelated features such as color.
Exit ticket
Show a moving and a still object. Ask: Which one is vibrating, and what is your evidence? Students may point and tell.
Extension
Find one safe classroom sound source. Point to or describe the part you think is vibrating when it makes sound.
